Baking Soda as a curl loosener/stretcher

So I posted this to a hair forum a while back and I've gotten some pretty mixed responses as to whether baking soda can really work this way. I've heard that some people use it more for clarifying, while others say it actually does loosen the curl or wave a bit. Read my take and tell me what you think.

Hey ladies! So, I'd been wanting to try out this new method of "relaxing" curls/new growth and it involves baking soda. A good friend of mines suggested it to me after reading up on it and trying it out herself(with good results of course). Well, I tried it out today, and I must say so far so good. Now, my hair is still currently wet so I really will not know how much it loosen my new growth until it dries. I've read that this method is great for natural hair and between relaxers. You mix one part baking soda with about 4(or 3, I did 4) parts conditioner, and you leave it in for a few minutes and then rinse as usual and continue to co-wash/pre-poo the hair. I was a tad apprehensive to try this technique out, for the simple fact that I'd read some negative reviews and results stories on it. Supposedly it has roughly the same affect on your hair as a chemical relaxer, which would make sense, since baking soda is an alkaline with many chemical properties. I did notice the relaxer like smell, which is what I'd read in some on the reviews, but nothing major like any discomfort or tingle.

I just wanted to get you guy's opinion on if you've ever tried this method, and if so how did it work out for you. If you haven't tried it, have you heard about it? Do you want to try it out for yourself?
